A post graduate in English Literature and Aesthectics, Pratima Kulkarni began her career in the field of performing arts at a very early age. First as a Bharat Natyam dancer and then as an actor on the experimental stage in Marathi. It was around the year 1974 when the experimental theatre in Marathi and so also in Hindi and other regional languages was thriving in and around Mumbai. It was in that vibrant atmosphere that she chose Theatre as her career and took keen interest in other aspects of theatre as well, besides acting. That brought her in contact with the veteran Director Vijaya Mehta and Pratima worked under her as Stage Manager and Asstt Director.
Later when Ms. Mehta turned to Cinema, Pratima too took it up as the Asstt. Director to Ms. Mehta. Fascinated by the medium of Camera, Pratima then continued to work in TV and Cinema along with Theatre.
Having made her Directorial debut with the play Atmakatha in the year 1988, she went on to win several awards for her work in Theatre and Television.
Her first film as an independent Director, a children’s film in Hindi titled SCHOOL was made in 2003 but before that she had worked with filmmakers like Shri Govind Nihalani, Dr. Jabbar Patel etc. as Asstt Director, Sub-title Writer etc. This film has had a successful run for several weeks in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata and was also invited to the Cairo Children’s Film Festival in 2005.
Screenplay and Dialogue Writer for Oh! Maria... a feature film in Konkani which ran for 25 weeks in Goa
Screenplay and Dialogue writer for SAVALI- a bilingual film in Marathi and Konkani, released in Goa and Maharashtra in December 2006, went on to receive four national awards and several state awards. Pratima won the Maharashtra State Award for Best Dialogue.
Currently working as Writer/Director and Actor for TV and Cinema mainly in Marathi, Pratima aspires to make meaningful work in Cinema in future, for children as well as adults.
