A post graduate in English Literature and Aesthectics, Pratima Kulkarni began her career in the field of performing arts at a very early age. First as a Bharat Natyam dancer and then as an actor on the experimental stage in Marathi. It was around the year 1974 when the experimental theatre in Marathi and so also in Hindi and other regional languages was thriving in and around Mumbai. It was in that vibrant atmosphere that she chose Theatre as her career and took keen interest in other aspects of theatre as well, besides acting. That brought her in contact with the veteran Director Vijaya Mehta and Pratima worked under her as Stage Manager and Asstt Director.

Later when Ms. Mehta turned to Cinema, Pratima too took it up as the Asstt. Director to Ms. Mehta. Fascinated by the medium of Camera, Pratima then continued to work in TV and Cinema along with Theatre.
